A Mother’s Warning

Dear Bryan,

As you prepare to take my not-quite-two-year-old first-born-girl-child camping (with Eric and Nathan in Nathan’s grandparents’ backyard—they live in the country folks), a few words of advice…please heed these or we may have a problem…

  • don’t let her fall in the fire
  • don’t let her fall in the pond
  • don’t let her choke on a hot dog
  • don’t let her suffocate in her sleeping bag
  • don’t let her get bitten by anything that starts with an “s” (spider, scorpion, snake…you get the picture)
  • don’t let her get too scared in the dark
  • don’t let her burn herself on a smores…or the thingy you roast the marshmallows on
  • don’t let her drive the tractor—never mind, don’t let her get on the tractor
  • please, please, please bring her home in the same condition that I sent her

Sincerely,

Lisa

P.S. Aren’t you glad I’m not that over protective type of parent?  They drive me crazy.  Their kids never get to experience anything fun…like nature.

23 Months of Hayden

 IMG_7213

I’m already bracing myself for next month…the BIG 2!  We’ve tried to prepare Hayden for the upcoming milestone: teaching her to hold up two fingers, having her answer the question “how old are you?” with the new number, allowing her to eat more cake (hard to say no when we are constantly stuffing it in our own faces), and of course reminding her that “big girls” who are 2 do NOT throw screaming tantrums on the floor (they obviously express their displeasure in a mature, calm manner and then accept their parents’ wishes respectfully.)

This past year between one and two has been SO MUCH FUN and so challenging.  Hayden is talkin’ up a storm.  In the car she will say, “mommy talk, daddy talk, ME talk” in an attempt to bring the attention back to herself when Bryan and I are grown up chatting. She is using 4-5 word sentences and her articulation gets better everyday. Her ability to communicate has made for some very funny conversations.  (note to self…start recording those.)

She is very good with the baby…still calls her baby most of the time…and enjoys having her picture made with her. Hayden still loves her Curious George doll and her rainbow blankie.  She is an absolute sponge when it comes to learning.  (the following isn’t bragging…just a totally detached statement of facts for the grandparents information) Hayden can identify and say all of her primary colors as well as “khaki” and “gray”, she can identify six different shapes and tell you some of their names, she can tell you which thing is bigger or smaller, she can complete all of her wooden puzzles independently, and can count to ten (though often forgets seven…God’s favorite). She loves to tell you about animals and what they say as well as what they eat.

Hayden has become more timid lately.  It’s like she realizes there are things that might cause her harm and she needs to check with us to make sure things are still good. She often asks us, “that won’t hurt me?”…mostly regarding things like birds or the vacuum cleaner.  Bryan says she gets it from him as he was more hesitant to try new things as a kid.  As I picture her going to jr. high I’m thinking this might not be a bad thing…

Hayden truly lights up every day for us.  Bryan just told me last night how much he loves it when she bounces into a room with a cheery, “hi Daddy!” and bounces off. There are definitely still times when we are glad God made her so cute…you know, for the times when nothing else keeps you from driving her to the firehouse and dropping her off. (repetitive screams of “NO” when asked to do something, refusal to eat what she happily ate the day before, throwing the ball--while looking at you from the corner of her eye--after you told her not to…) But for the most part she is such a joy and we are so very blessed!

Lord, thank you for blessing us with Hayden! Please prepare us for what the next year will bring!!!

(FYI-though safe haven laws in Texas protect parents who leave their abandoned children with police, firefighters or doctors I was totally kidding about the firehouse…mostly)

All Church Picnic

PCBC hosted their all church picnic this past Saturday. There was a bounce house; a very large blow up obstacle course and slide; a petting zoo with lamas, goats, bunnies and some chickens; face painting; cookies; and a juggler on stilts.  Hayden fed the animals and got her face painted.  We put off the bounce house for another year and avoided the cookies since we were going to lunch afterwards.  Hayden was NOT a fan of the stilted juggler and wanted nothing to do with him.  Overall we had a great time with friends and nature. (scroll over for caption)

smells like nature mr. bunny, would you like some food? H. after she dumped the whole cup on bunnies head Llama, Llama no pajamas goats would rather eat the paper cups  no need for hand sanitizer, finger lickin' clean what would she like? something quick in case she changes her mind... All pooped out

Thank you Lord for our church friends and fun picnics!

Strollin’ With My Homies

We’ve gotten out twice so far to stroll the neighborhood in our double stroller (thanks Pierces and Stricklands!) Hayden has checked out the ride from both the front and the backseat.  She currently enjoys saying “backseat” so that seems to be what she is gravitating to if given a choice.  Lauren doesn’t seem to care.

I was afraid the double stroller would be like pushing a limo after having pushed a Mini Cooper for two years, but it actually isn’t bad at all.  May not maneuver the mall well, but when do we go to the mall anyway? (Bryan is reading this and thinking to himself, “when does she go outside for a walk…”) But I am trying to do better.  Post pregnancy bulge is quite the motivator.

Thank you Lord for the beautiful weather we’ve been having.  Thank you for our sweet ride that let’s us enjoy time outside!

Milestone-Social Smile (wk 5)

Lauren gave her daddy her first real “non gassy” smile.  She gave her pediatrician the second.  I settled for her third…chopped liver around here. Dr. S. was surprised at how early she started this, but we reminded him she was over two weeks late which means she probably seems to be much advanced for her age :)

Thank you Lord for sweet baby smiles.  They just light up our day!

Hayden, “More baby, please!”

Me, “uh, maybe later sweetie.”

Lauren to herself, “later…when I’m better able to defend myself.”

One Month of Lauren

IMG_7306

Can you believe that Lauren has been here for a month?

This past month has flown (except for some of the nights…they’ve crawled.)  We have had so much fun getting to know her.

Lauren hasn’t learned many tricks, but what she does she does well.  She is a great eater and pooper and is even a good sleeper…when she wants to be.  The past few nights she has eaten at 11, 3, and 7 which has allowed me six hours of sleep in two large chunks! Yay Lauren, Yay me!

Lauren likes milk, baths, rocking in the rocking chair, gazing into our eyes and occasionally sharing loves with her sister.  She doesn’t mind having her diaper or clothes changed...  which is good since it seems to happen ALL the time.  She has started the Prevacid (like Hayden was on) and it seems to have helped ease some discomfort she was showing after she ate. Apparently the reflux can run in the family.

She has gained weight like a champ.  I’ll find out her current stats on Friday when we visit Dr. S. for our one month visit.  I’m looking forward to finding out how “healthy” she is.

We are making it day by day and with the grace of God. Going from 1 to 2 is no cake walk folks, but we have been receiving lots of meals, prayers and visits which have been so helpful!

Thank you Lord for Lauren Elizabeth.  We are so glad you chose to send her to our family. Thank you for our friends and family who have cared for us during all the transition!

Watch Out Eggs, Here She Comes…

We enjoyed a great Easter service at PCBC and then a few hours of rest at home before heading to Nathan’s Nana’s house where we hunted eggs, ate a fabulous meal and had great fellowship with good friends! Thank you Macys/Boardmans for including us!

Lord, Thank you for sending your Son to die on the cross for us.  Thank you that He has risen, he has risen INDEED!
